What is Pitra Dosh

The word itself decode its meaning that is, Pitra – forefathers. Any person whose forefathers have committed any crime, mistakes or sins, then the person is having Pitra Dosh in his horoscope. In simple words, it is paying the Karmic debts of the ancestors.

The Brahma Puran considers the occasion of Shraad very significant. The Puran holds the idea that the Lord of Death, "Yamraj" liberate all the souls on the day of Shraad to go and eat the food made by their children. Those children who do not do Shraad, angry their forefathers returning to their world without eating food. Those children suffer from Pitra Dosh. Shraad comes on the eve of Krishna Paksha of Ashvin month.

Sudden immature death points us to Pitra Dosh. One must consider some examples from our area only. Sudden deaths like "Ishmeet Singh", "Sanjay Gandhi", "Pramod Mahajan", etc.

General Traits of Pitra Dosh

  • One can have a dream of ancestors asking you for food or clothes.
  • If the person or any other family member see dreams related to snakes hint towards Pitra dosh.

Effects of Pitra Dosh

  • Pitra Dosh, Children can face mental and physical disabilities. Either later or from the day of the birth.
  • Un-favorable environment and arguments on small things with life-partner.
  • Sometimes one is not able to marry at the correct time. Delay in marriage.
  • The person face financial and physical problems due to continuous sickness.
  • The person is having Pitra Dosh, if he is not able to achieve success in any work he starts.
  • Continuous scarcity and financial problems.
  • If the person or any other family member see dreams related to snakes hint towards this dosha.
  • One can have a dream of ancestors asking you for food or clothes.

Remedies of Pitra Dosh

  • Offer water to Banyan tree regularly.
  • Keep fasts to reduce the effects of Dosha.
  • Organize Pooja or Mantra Jap to nullify the effects of past sinful activities done by ancestors.
  • Give food to Brahmins on every Amavasya.
  • Donate food, blankets, bedding and clothes on the day of Ardh-Kumbha-Snaan.
  • Give food and milk to cows, street dogs, crows and ants.
  • Complete Trapandi Shraad.
  • Give help to poor, needy and old people as much as possible.
  • Chant the mantras of Devi Kaalika Stotram. Especially on Navratre.
  • Do Snaan at various religious places like, Ujjain, Nasik, Ganga Sagar, Haridwar, etc.
  • Offer water mixed with sesame seeds to the rising Sun regularly and chant Gayatri Mantra.

Shraad

Very significant to reduce the effects of Pitra Dosh. One must do Shraad to get blessings fron the ancestors. At times, Re-births takes place when the souls does not rest in peace and we have to clear the debts of our forefathers.

What to do ?

  • Do the Shraad on the date of your forefather's death.
  • Offer water to Pitras on the date of death or on all the Shraads.
  • Offer food, blankets or clothes at religious places on every "Poornima" and "Amavasya"
  • Respect your parents and elders to get blessings.
  • Cook food for the dead ones. Your ancestors come to your door to accept your food.

What not to do ?

The person having Pitra Dosh must avoid doing the following things during Pitra Paksha ( shraad ). Especially on the last day of Mahalaya Amavasya.

  • Do not purchase new clothes, utensils or ornaments.
  • Do not celebrate the birth of new born or new job.
  • Postpone important things and marriage celebrations.
  • Avoid constructing house or new property.
  • Do not eat non-vegetarian food or garlic.
  • Do not go for a haircut.
